Nicki V. Nicolai Vavilov was destroyed by Lysenko and murdered by Stalin in 1943. Yet he was the genius that connected Darwin's ideas to agriculture. He toured Asia in the 1920s looking for the original habitats and populations of most food plants and animals. He found them and most modern agriculture is based on what he found. Seed banks around the world dedicate their existence to him. He was once vilified in Russia but now he is celebrated around the world. The illustration showing Vavilov, Lysenko and Stalin is by Robero Bobrow and used with permission.
