Hope is the killer. Throughout history, when people are confronted by evil and violence, they hope that bad things won't happen to them. The hope causes them to freeze and not fight back. The Jews exiting the cattle cars at Nazi concentration camps, hostages confronted by butcher knives, voters in peaceful democratic countries. Hope makes people think that things will get better. Often things don't. By fighting back at the time of injustice, better progress can be made. The photo is taken inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
